Chapter 6

It had been a long three days without a response to his messages. Nykal had sent more than he should, and each one had an increasingly desperate edge, practically begging her to respond. He could tell from the logs she hadn’t even viewed them. That meant either she was deleting them as they came in, or there was something wrong with her.

If she were ill, she might not have gotten her messages. As much as he didn’t want something to be wrong with her, he almost hoped that was the case rather than she was deliberately ignoring his missives. If she didn’t want to hear from him or see his messages, that meant she was through with him. He couldn’t stand the thought, and he suspected he was farther in the viiraria process than he’d estimated.

It was literally a compulsion he couldn’t control as he paced through his quarters, searching for a solution. He tried to think of other ways to contact her, but the only one that would work for certain was to go in person. She couldn’t delete him without looking at him.

There was so much pressure to stay though. There were a number of delicate negotiations to undertake, plus the usual duties. It all weighed heavily on him, and he cast a scathing glare at the crown that sat on the desk in the corner. He refused to wear the bloody thing unless he had to for public functions. All his resentment distilled down and focused on the crown. If he’d been standing right beside it, he probably would’ve picked it up and thrown it across the room.

He recognized the unsteadiness and clouding of his thoughts as withdrawal symptoms that he could attribute to the beginning stages of the viiraria. He needed to be with Hadley to calm himself and find equilibrium again. He needed to be with her on a permanent basis. He walked over to the database, tapping on his datapad as he looked for a way to keep her.

The planet’s parliamentary agreement forbade any Jroj from propagating outside the species, but there was no explicit ban on relationships outside the species. He knew restrictions were tighter on him, as the Crown Prince, but he was searching for a way around it. He founded it in a historical archive rather than in a parliamentary document, and just knowing there was an option filled him with a semblance of peace—or at least left his thoughts clear enough to come up with a solid plan.

He raised Vasar on his wrist comm, and his brother’s face appeared on the small screen. “Do you have a few moments to stop by my quarters? I’m in my private study.”

Vasar nodded. “Of course.”

With no further need to communicate that way, he ended the connection and waited for his brother. There was a knock at the door less than ten minutes later, and he walked over to open it. When his brother had slipped inside, he closed the door and locked it with his palm before leading his brother to the arrangement of seating in the corner.
